26th July – 4th August 2019 – Batchworth are coming…
Lochearnhead Scout Station is a unique expedition venue. Located in the beautiful Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Lochearnhead Railway Station was originally built in the 1900s by the Caledonian Railway Company and is now owned by Hertfordshire Scouts. It has been fully restored & converted to provide an adventurous activities base in the Scottish Highlands.
Batchworth Sea Scouts have the opportunity to organise an expedition to Lochearnhead every 4 or 5 years; ideally once in every scout’s time with us. However, we’ve not been able to visit since 2006, so we are long overdue a trip north!
Therefore, we’re delighted to be returning in the Summer of 2019. The total cost per youth member is £325 – BUT, we’ll be organising fundraising with a view to reducing this by at least £100 per member.
*Scouts who are expecting to transition up to Explorers at the start of the September term, will be counted as scouts for the purposes of the summer expedition. Cubs who have yet to start in scouts will be asked to remain on the expedition waiting list until confirmation of attendance from current scouts is confirmed. With luck, they’ll get to go in 4 years time if they miss out this time around!
Lochearnhead is a breath-taking place to run a scouting expedition. The programme will revolve around a few main activities:
- Sailing on the 6 mile long loch
- Hillwalking amongst the Trossachs
- Cycling the reused railway tracks
- Climbing on natural rock-faces
- Canoeing the River Dochart
The intention is to leave Rickmansworth on Friday morning by coach, returning 8 days later on the Saturday afternoon.
All accommodation is within purpose built bunk-rooms – for both male and female youth members, and for the adult supervision team. The disused station buildings provide a fully stocked kitchen (to be called the galley during our stay), a mess hall and “sun lounge” plus office spaces. We will run a fully catered expedition, to allow the scouts and explorers to the focus on activities during the week (though there will be some chores!).
A full kit list is available and please discuss equipment queries with the leadership team. We’ll run some sessions on this topic before we go, to ensure everyone is well prepared.
The expedition will be lead by Batchworth’s experienced team, who between them have attended Lochearnhead a dozen times. Each trip has been the highlight of that generation’s scouts. All adventurous activities will fully comply with the stringent Scout Association regulations with all adults completing a DBS check.

Given the potentially adventurous nature of the expedition and the location remote from Hertfordshire, we are asking that all attendees will by the time of departure have experienced:
- At least 5 nights away from home, either within scouting or on school trips. We will be running a number of weekends away before July to help people ‘top-up’.
- Attendance of RYA Stage 1 & 2 sailing courses, or at least 5 previous experiences of dinghy sailing. We will offer several opportunities for sailing before July and also recommend BLYM’s courses that run over Easter and Half-Term.
- At least one hike of minimum 4 hours duration on hilly terrain.
- Use of a mountain bike with both front and rear gears.
This guidance is to ensure a basic level of understanding before we arrive at the station, to maximise the enjoyment of the programme when we get there. We’ll help everyone obtain these levels before we go.
