Fuel, Oxygen and (sufficient) heat

What are the 3 things you need to make fire?

Embers, because most of the energy from embers is radiated as heat, not light - which is not the case with flames (ever tried cooking over a torch bulb !!)

What is it best to cook on, Embers or Flames ? Give the reason why

Washing up liquid (or a detergent paste)

What should you put on the bottom of cooking pots to stop them going black ?

A fire raised off the ground (like a church altar)

What is an "Altar fire"?

A fire built in a trench, where new fuel is put in at one end, and the resulting embers are moved to the other end to cook on

What is an "Trench fire"?

Softwood, it burns more quickly but has a lower ignition temperature to get the fire going more easily

Which is best for starting a fire, softwood or hardwood ?

Hardwood, it burns more slowly giving an even release of heat, though has a higher ignition temperature so the fire has to be well established first

Which is best for cooking on, softwood or hardwood ?

Are the following good for use on fires:

No , too much smoke and hardly any fuel

Leaves?

No, generally too wet and not much fuel

Bark?

Yes, though the fire must be established first

Logs?

No, green wood is too wet

Green wood?

No, although it has a low ignition temperature there is hardly any fuel to use

Paper?

Yes, good for lighting fires (as long as they are dry)

Small twigs?

A Fire bucket

What should you always have by a fire?

Be Prepared (it's always the answer !)- gather all your fuel and materials first, and know what you are doing

What should you always be before you light a fire ?
